What this card shows
The Failed fertilization rate (IVF) card shows what share of stimulated IVF cycles ended with no fertilized oocytes at all, month by month. It covers conventional IVF only, where oocytes and sperm are placed together in a dish.
Unlike the other cards on this tab, this one counts cycles, not oocytes. A cycle is counted as failed when not one of its oocytes reached two or more pronuclei at the Day 1 check, roughly 17 hours after insemination. For the patient, that is a cycle with nothing to transfer or freeze.
There are three lines:
Failed fertilization rate: your monthly rate.
Excluding discarded oocytes: the same rate with discarded oocytes left out.
Benchmark: the Vienna Consensus benchmark, below 5%.
Excluding discarded oocytes is the dotted line, shown for contrast. The headline is the one to read and the one the benchmark applies to, because the Vienna Consensus fixes this measurement at the Day 1 check, before any disposal decision, and it declines to set benchmarks for measures that depend on what a lab chooses to discard or freeze.
On this card the dotted line is worth reading with extra care. Leaving discarded oocytes out does not just change the rate, it changes which cycles can be assessed at all: a cycle whose only graded oocytes were later discarded drops out of the measurement entirely. In practice most of the cycles that reappear once discarded oocytes are counted turn out to have fertilized normally, so the dotted line is not a stricter version of the headline. It is a different question.
This is one of the cards where lower is better, so you want your line sitting below the benchmark.
Reading the card
The denominator is stimulated IVF cycles with at least one Day 1 grading available. Stimulated cycles are identified by having collected more than one oocyte, since a natural cycle produces a single oocyte by design.
Cycles with no Day 1 grading available are left out of both the numerator and the denominator, because there is no way to tell whether they fertilized. A cycle with no gradings is not counted as a failure.
A grading counts even if that oocyte was later discarded. This matters more here than it looks: a cycle where every oocyte was eventually discarded often did fertilize normally first, so counting those gradings keeps the cycle from being read as a fertilization failure when it was not one.
The Benchmark line is a flat reference line from the Vienna Consensus, not a measurement from your lab.

Because the rate is low and the unit is cycles rather than oocytes, a single failed cycle can move a low-volume month noticeably. Read the trend across several months.
This card measures something different from a low IVF normal (2PN) fertilization rate. A drifting 2PN rate suggests something gradual in culture conditions or handling. Total failure in a cycle points instead at gamete quality, sperm function, oocyte activation, or the sperm concentration used at insemination. Read the two together.
The card lives on the Laboratory performance (Vienna consensus KPIs) dashboard, on the Fertilization Performance tab, and responds to the filters at the top:
Date: change the time window. It scopes by the date of fertilization, and defaults to the past 6 months plus the current month.
Clinic: focus on one or more locations, if your organization has several.
Treatment type, Age at cycle start and BMI: narrow to a subset of cycles.
Where this data comes from
Everything here comes from the Culture tab of the patient's Cycle page: the number of oocytes collected is entered on the aspiration record, the insemination is recorded as a fertilization event, and the Day 1 observation on each oocyte carries the pronuclei grading.
Recording the Day 1 check is what puts a cycle into this card at all. A cycle with no gradings cannot be evaluated and drops out of the measurement entirely, so consistent Day 1 recording is what keeps this rate representative.
Opening this card
In wawa, open Insights from the sidebar, then go to Standard Reports → Laboratory Performance → Laboratory performance (Vienna consensus KPIs). Select the Fertilization Performance tab. The Failed fertilization rate (IVF) card is on it.
