What this card shows

The Blastocyst development rate card shows what share of normally fertilized oocytes reached the blastocyst stage by Day 5, 6 or 7 of culture, month by month.

A blastocyst (Bl) is the stage an embryo reaches around five days after fertilization, when its cells first differentiate into two distinct parts: the inner cell mass (ICM), which becomes the fetus, and the trophectoderm (TE), which becomes the placenta. Reaching this stage is the main developmental hurdle in the lab, and it is the stage most embryos are transferred or frozen at.

There are four lines:

  • Blastocyst development rate: your monthly rate.

  • Excluding discarded embryos: the same rate with discarded embryos left out.

  • Competency: the Vienna Consensus competency level, 40% or above.

  • Benchmark: the Vienna Consensus benchmark, 60% or above.

Excluding discarded embryos is the dotted line, shown for contrast. It answers the same question while leaving out any that the lab later discarded.

The two lines together tell you how much of your result rests on embryos that were discarded afterwards. The headline is the one to read and the one the reference lines apply to, because the Vienna Consensus fixes this denominator at the Day 1 observation, before any disposal decision has been made, and it declines to set benchmarks for measures that depend on what a lab chooses to discard or freeze. The dotted line therefore has no competency or benchmark applied to it.

Reading the card

  • The denominator is all normally fertilized oocytes, meaning those showing two pronuclei at the Day 1 check. Unlike the Day 2 and Day 3 cards, this one uses the full 2PN cohort, which is the strict Vienna denominator.

  • The numerator counts any embryo whose Day 5 to Day 7 grading identifies it as a blastocyst, including early blastocysts. There is no quality gate here: an embryo counts if it got to the stage, whatever its grade.

  • Embryos that were later discarded still count, in both halves. An embryo that arrested before Day 5 is usually discarded soon afterwards, so leaving those out would remove much of what the card is measuring.

  • Because the denominator is the full cohort rather than only what was graded, a missing Day 5 grading counts against this rate. An embryo that reached blastocyst but was never graded looks the same here as one that arrested.

  • The Competency and Benchmark lines are flat reference lines from the Vienna Consensus, not measurements from your lab.

Read this next to Good blastocyst development rate on the same tab. This card asks how many embryos got there; that one asks how many arrived in usable condition. The gap between the two lines is where quality, rather than survival, shows up.

The card lives on the Laboratory performance (Vienna consensus KPIs) dashboard, on the Embryo Development tab, and responds to the filters at the top:

  • Date: change the time window. It scopes by the date of fertilization, and defaults to the past 6 months plus the current month.

  • Clinic: focus on one or more locations, if your organization has several.

  • Treatment type, Age at cycle start and BMI: narrow to a subset of cycles.

Where this data comes from

Both halves of this card come from the Culture tab of the patient's Cycle page: the Day 1 observation carries the pronuclei grading that puts an embryo into the cohort, and the Day 5 to Day 7 observation carries the blastocyst grading.

This is one of the cards where recording completeness moves the number directly. Every 2PN embryo on file is in the denominator whether or not it was graded later, so an ungraded blastocyst pushes this rate down. Grading every embryo that reaches Day 5, before any decision to freeze or discard it, is what keeps this rate honest.
