What this card shows

The Proportion of oocytes recovered card compares how many eggs were collected at retrieval against how many mature follicles were measured beforehand, month by month. A follicle is the fluid-filled sac in the ovary that holds a developing egg, and follicles of 10mm or more are the ones considered worth aspirating.

There are three lines:

  • Recovery rate: your monthly rate.

  • Expected lower and Expected upper: the Vienna Consensus expected range, 80% to 95%.

This is an indicator of stimulation, trigger timing and aspiration technique. It is not a measure of laboratory performance.

Reading the card

  • The denominator is the number of follicles of 10mm or more counted across both ovaries on the patient's most recent follicle scan in the 14 days before retrieval. The numerator is the number of eggs actually collected.

  • Values outside the expected range are worth reviewing against stimulation, trigger timing or aspiration practice, rather than against anything the lab did.

  • The rate can legitimately exceed 100%. Smaller follicles sometimes yield an egg even though they were not counted in the denominator. A figure a little above 100% is normal and not a data error.

  • Only stimulated cycles are included, identified as cycles where more than one egg was retrieved. Natural cycles produce a single egg by design, so including them would distort the rate.

  • Hover any point to see the exact figure.

Because the denominator depends on a follicle scan being recorded in the two weeks before retrieval, cycles without one drop out of the card, as do cycles whose scan recorded no follicle of 10mm or more. Where follicle measurements are recorded inconsistently, or at only some of your locations, the card covers only part of your caseload.

The card lives on the Laboratory performance (Vienna consensus KPIs) dashboard, on the Andrology & PGT tab, and responds to the filters at the top:

  • Date: change the time window. It scopes by the date of the egg retrieval, and defaults to the past 6 months plus the current month.

  • Clinic: focus on one or more locations, if your organization has several.

  • Treatment type, Age at cycle start and BMI: narrow to a subset of cycles.

Where this data comes from

Two records feed this card, and they are entered in different places.

The denominator comes from the follicle scan, entered on the follicle ultrasound report in the patient's Ultrasounds records. Each follicle is measured on its own, for each ovary, and the form keeps a running total beside the table, including how many measured under 10mm and how many over 16mm.

Recording individual follicle measurements on the follicle scan before retrieval, rather than only a summary, is what allows this card to count the 10mm-and-over follicles for a cycle.

The numerator comes from the retrieval. The Culture tab of the patient's Cycle page lists what the retrieval produced, and the Source column on each row links back to the aspiration it came from.

The aspiration record itself holds the counts: how many follicles were aspirated, how many eggs were collected, and how many of those were mature. Collected is the figure this card divides by the follicle count.

Opening this card

In wawa, open Insights from the sidebar, then go to Standard Reports → Laboratory Performance → Laboratory performance (Vienna consensus KPIs). Select the Andrology & PGT tab. The Proportion of oocytes recovered card is on it.
