What this card shows

The Blastocyst cryosurvival rate card shows what share of frozen blastocysts survived thawing with their structure intact, month by month.

Blastocysts are frozen for later use and thawed when the patient is ready for transfer. The lab checks each one after thaw and records its condition. An embryo that comes through viable, expanded, or hatching has survived. One recorded as damaged, degraded, or collapsed has not.

There are four lines:

  • Cryosurvival rate: your monthly rate.

  • Excluding discarded embryos: the same rate with discarded embryos left out.

  • Competency: the Vienna Consensus competency level, 90% or above.

  • Benchmark: the Vienna Consensus benchmark, 99% or above.

Excluding discarded embryos is the dotted line, shown for contrast. It answers the same question while leaving out any that the lab later discarded.

The two lines together tell you how much of your result rests on embryos that were discarded afterwards. The headline is the one to read and the one the reference lines apply to, because the Vienna Consensus fixes this denominator at the post-thaw assessment, before any disposal decision has been made, and it declines to set benchmarks for measures that depend on what a lab chooses to discard or freeze. The dotted line therefore has no competency or benchmark applied to it.

The thresholds are high because modern vitrification is expected to be near-lossless. A rate meaningfully below 90% is a signal worth investigating.

Reading the card

  • The denominator is every thawed embryo with a post-thaw condition recorded against it. Thawed oocytes are assessed after thaw as well, but they are not counted here, so this is a measure of embryo thaws alone.

  • Damaged, degraded and collapsed count as not surviving.

  • An embryo discarded after the thaw still counts. That matters: an embryo that did not survive is usually discarded soon afterwards, so leaving those out would remove most of the failures and flatter the rate.

  • The Competency and Benchmark lines are flat reference lines from the Vienna Consensus, not measurements from your lab.

  • Hover any point to see the exact figure.

  • Unlike the other cards on this tab, this one is dated by thaw date, not fertilization date. An embryo frozen a year ago and thawed last month appears in last month's figure.

That dating matters when you are reading a change. A dip in this card reflects thaws performed that month, which may involve embryos frozen across a long span of time and by different techniques. A sustained drop points at the freezing protocol, the thaw protocol, or storage handling rather than at anything happening in fresh culture.

The card lives on the Laboratory performance (Vienna consensus KPIs) dashboard, on the Embryo Development tab, and responds to the filters at the top:

  • Date: change the time window. It scopes by thaw date, and defaults to the past 6 months plus the current month.

  • Clinic: focus on one or more locations, if your organization has several.

  • Treatment type, Age at cycle start and BMI: narrow to a subset of cycles.

Where this data comes from

The post-thaw condition is recorded per embryo, in a Post thaw column on the Culture tab of the patient's Cycle page. On a cycle whose embryos all came from a fresh oocyte collection the column is hidden, and can be shown from the + menu at the end of the grading columns.

Only embryos with a condition recorded appear on this card at all, so a blank Post thaw field removes the embryo from the measurement rather than counting it either way. Recording the condition on every thaw, including the ones that did not survive, is what makes this rate representative.

Opening this card

In wawa, open Insights from the sidebar, then go to Standard Reports → Laboratory Performance → Laboratory performance (Vienna consensus KPIs). Select the Embryo Development tab. The Blastocyst cryosurvival rate card is on it.
