ICSI damage rate

What this card shows

The ICSI damage rate card shows what share of injected oocytes were recorded as damaged at the Day 1 fertilization check, month by month. ICSI is intracytoplasmic sperm injection, where a single sperm is injected directly into an oocyte, and some degree of damage from the injection itself is expected.

There are four lines:

  • Damage rate: your monthly rate.

  • Excluding discarded oocytes: the same rate with discarded oocytes left out.

  • Competency: the Vienna Consensus competency level, 10% or below.

  • Benchmark: the Vienna Consensus benchmark, 5% or below.

Excluding discarded oocytes is the dotted line, shown for contrast. It answers the same question while leaving out any that the lab later discarded.

The two lines together tell you how much of your result rests on oocytes that were discarded afterwards. The headline is the one to read and the one the reference lines apply to, because the Vienna Consensus fixes this denominator at the Day 1 observation, before any disposal decision has been made, and it declines to set benchmarks for measures that depend on what a lab chooses to discard or freeze. The dotted line therefore has no competency or benchmark applied to it.

On this card the dotted line usually sits at or near zero: a damaged or degenerate oocyte is discarded almost every time, so excluding discards removes nearly the whole numerator.

This is one of the cards where lower is better, so you want your line sitting below the two reference lines rather than above them.

Reading the card

  • An oocyte counts as damaged if its first Day 1 observation grades it as degenerate, or if it was recorded with a degenerated maturity.

  • The denominator is all oocytes linked to an ICSI fertilization in the window, so the rate is damaged oocytes as a share of everything injected.

  • The card covers standard ICSI along with the p-ICSI, d-ICSI, IMSI and rescue ICSI variants.

  • The Competency and Benchmark lines are flat reference lines from the Vienna Consensus, not measurements from your lab.

  • Hover any point to see the exact figure.

Two limits are worth knowing:

  • The card recognizes damage recorded as degenerate. Injection damage described in other terms, such as an oocyte recorded as out of zona or as fragmented, is not currently picked up, so the true rate may be slightly higher than the line.

  • Degenerate grading only became consistently recorded from around September 2025, so readings from before then run artificially low and should not be compared with recent months.

The card lives on the Laboratory performance (Vienna consensus KPIs) dashboard, on the Andrology & PGT tab, and responds to the filters at the top:

  • Date: change the time window. It scopes by the date of fertilization, and defaults to the past 6 months plus the current month.

  • Clinic: focus on one or more locations, if your organization has several.

  • Treatment type, Age at cycle start and BMI: narrow to a subset of cycles.

Where this data comes from

Both halves of this card come from the Culture tab of the patient's Cycle page: the injection is recorded as a fertilization event, and the Day 1 observation on each oocyte carries the grading that flags damage.

Because a damaged oocyte only counts when its grading says so, recording the Day 1 check on every injected oocyte, including the ones that did not survive, is what keeps this rate honest.

Opening this card

In wawa, open Insights from the sidebar, then go to Standard Reports → Laboratory Performance → Laboratory performance (Vienna consensus KPIs). Select the Andrology & PGT tab. The ICSI damage rate card is on it.
