The wawa platform allows for surrogate relationships to be created and for embryos to be linked from IPs cryo records to surrogate's cycles.

How do you indicate a patient is a surrogate?

Surrogates use a patient profile on wawa, rather than a donor profile. In order to indicate that a patient is a surrogate, use the relationships tab to link them to their Intended Parents.

You can also use flags and alerts to signify additional information related to the surrogate that you would like to see at first glance when opening the surrogate's patient page.

How do you link surrogates to Intended Parents?

  1. Visit the surrogate's patient page

  2. Navigate to the Relationships tab

  3. Click "Add relationship"

  4. Choose "Surrogate" from the relationship dropdown

  5. Add the wawa patient ID of the Intended Parent

  6. Click "Save"

The relationship will appear on both the surrogate and the Intended Parents' page, and can be ended by clicking ••• to the right of the relationship's row and selecting "End relationship."

How do I mark that a cryopreserved sample is for treatment in a surrogacy arrangement?

In order to mark cryopreserved samples as reserved for treatment for a surrogate, use the reservation flow available from the cryostorage record's page.

How do I move a fresh gamete or embryo to a surrogate's cycle?

  1. Ensure that the recipient surrogate has an active cycle indicated on their profile, and is connected to the oocyte provider IP using the relationships tab

  2. Visit the oocyte provider IPs patient page, and navigate to the culture tab.

  3. From here, click on the checkbox to the left of the embryo(s) and/or oocyte(s) that you would like to move to the surrogate's cycle

  4. Click "Transfer to surrogate"

From the IP culture page: The relevant sample(s) will now be highlighted in yellow and have the fate Moved to surrogate cycle. By clicking on this text you will be able to jump directly to the culture page of the surrogate's relevant cycle.

From the surrogate culture page: The relevant sample(s) will appear with the source as donation. By clicking on this text you will be able to jump directly to the culture page of the oocyte provider IP's relevant cycle.

How do I thaw a sample into a surrogate's cycle?

  1. Nominate the sample for the surrogate

    • This needs to be done regardless of sample type – sperm, oocytes or embryos – when the relevant sample is in cryostorage

  2. Ensure the surrogate has an active cycle indicated on their profile

  3. Add the relevant oocyte and sperm providers as the gamete providers in the surrogate's cycle

  4. Navigate back to the relevant sample, and click "Thaw"

  5. Select the surrogate's relevant cycle and finalize the thaw

  6. The sample(s) will now appear on the surrogate's Culture page

How do I transfer an embryo in a surrogate's cycle?

If an embryo is created on the surrogate's cycle: click "Transfer" to document the transfer.

If an embryo is created on the IP's cycle: click "Transfer to surrogate" which will move the embryo into the surrogate's cycle. Then select the embryo and click "Transfer" to document the transfer.
